Brian Whelehan’s reign as Offaly hurling boss got off to a winning start after a 1-17 to 0-14 Walsh Cup preliminary-round victory over Antrim in Tullamore.

The visitors began the game on the front foot and held a 0-09 to 0-05 lead at half-time.

The Ulster side extended their advantage to five points before Tommy Geraghty and Joe Bergin, who ended up with nine points, helped Offaly draw level.

An late own goal by Conor McKinley killed of the challenge of Kevin Ryan’s men.
