Portumna claimed their sixth Galway SHC title in ten years with a 3-12 to 0-14 win over Loughrea in Pearse Stadium.

Joe Canning blasted home a 20-metre free with eight minutes on the clock to give Portumna a 1-02 to 0-01 lead.

But despite Andy Smith also raising a green flag, the sides were all square, 2-05 to 0-11, at the break.

Damien Hayes added a third goal to put seven points between the sides and Loughrea’s Johnny Coen had an opportunity to narrow the gap with a late penalty but only managed a point.

The game had been postponed by 24 hours as a mark of respect for Galway hurler Niall Donoghue, who died suddenly last week, and the crowd of 8,800 observed a minute’s silence before the game.
