Kilkenny hurler Henry Shefflin underwent surgery on his foot last week, according to the Irish Examiner, and faces a race against time to be fit for their opening Championship tie.

The 11-time All-Star has been out since December after he went off injured during a club game with Ballyhale Shamrocks.

It is the fourth time in five years that the nine-time All-Ireland winner has undergone off-season surgery.

The 34-year-old, who has started every Championship game under manager Brian Cody, is now a major doubt for the Liam MacCarthy holders when they open their Leinster campaign against Offaly in Tullamore on 9 June.
