Kilkenny forward Eddie Brennan has retired from inter-county hurling, RTÉ Sport understands.

In a hugely successful career, the 33-year-old Graigue-Ballycallan clubman won eight All-Irelands, 10 Leinster titles, four National Hurling Leagues and four All-Star awards.

He played a key role in Kilkenny's All-Ireland triumph over Tipperary last September, setting up a crucial goal for Richie Hogan as the Cats won 2-17 to 1-16.

But he has decided to call time on his career before the start of the 2012 National Hurling League campaign.

He is the second high-profile Kilkenny player to leave the panel recently, following in the footsteps of James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick who announced his decision to quit inter-county hurling in November.
