Conor Grugan struck 3-08 from play as Tyrone comfortably advanced to the Ulster SHC quarter-finals courtesy of a facile 25-point win over Cavan at Healy Park.

A brace of Grugan goals helped the hosts into a 2-10 to 1-10 interval lead, with a Kevin Downes goal keeping the visitors in touch.

However, Tyrone upped the ante on the restart. Grugan and Justin Kelly were particularly impressive as the Red Hands held Cavan to just four second half points.

Tyrone lost all six of their games in Division 3B of the National League, but showed that they were eager to set the Ulster Championship alight from the off.

Kevin Downes opened Cavan's account after a minute with a pointed free, but this was the only time the visitors would lead in the game.

Grugan quickly equalised before the hosts claimed their first goal of the contest in the eighth minute. Grugan doubled on the ball from close range - after a lengthy free had been played in by Justin Kelly - for the hosts to move three points clear.

Downes claimed three points from frees to keep Cavan in touch, but scores from Grugan and Gary Fox kept Tyrone in front - they led by 1-05 to 0-06 by the 19th minute.

Kelly continued to punish Cavan from placed balls, while Grugan added a second goal in the 30th minute to edge his side 2-06 to 0-08 ahead.

A trio of scores extended Tyrone's lead to six points in first half injury-time, but Cavan had the final say of the half when Mickey McBride's goal was breached by Downes.

However, Tyrone overwhelmed Cavan on the restart as Carrickmore duo Grugan and Kelly continued to cause damage. Sean McLoughney and Peter O'Connor also added some excellent scores for the runaway winners.

Kelly netted a goal from a long range free, ten minutes into the second half, with Grugan completing his hat-trick in the 49th minute, following a darting run through the Cavan defence.

Goals continued to flow freely for Tyrone with full-forward Cormac McHugh adding a fifth, making it 5-19 to 1-13 as the game entered the final quarter.

Cavan could one manage one more point, as the home side kept pressing for scores and McLoughney netted their sixth goal, four minutes from time.
