Dublin's former All-Ireland football winning captain Kevin Heffernan is to be awarded the 'Freedom of Dublin'.
The city's Lord Mayor, Royston Brady, says that no other Dubliner has done more to encourage young people to particiapte in sport.
The possibility of the ceremony taking place in Croke Park or Parnell Park is being explored.
Heffernan, who played with the St Vincent's club, captained the Dubs to their 1958 All-Ireland win, also featuring as a substitute in their 1963 Championship-winning side.
He also won eight Railway Cup medals, playing in the left corner forward position and was noted for his great pace and scoring skills.
