Armagh’s Charlie Shanks and Mayo’s Dessie Keegan were knocked out of 40x20 quarter-finals at the USA Pro Stop in Cour deAlene, Idaho.

Shanks, who recently moved to New York, qualified for the main event with two wins before dominating the highly rated Armando Ortiz 21-3, 21-17 in the last 16.

He then went head to head with the number two ranked US player, Naty Alvarado from California but lost 3-21 21-17 11-10.

Shanks said: “I thought I had him after the first game, but I think my level of play dropped while he raised his. But I had my opportunity in the tie breaker and I didn't close it out.”

Ballaghadereen’s Keegan enjoyed a great run of three victories before faltering at the hands of Alan Garner from Texas in the last eight 21-11, 21-5.

Keegan said: “It was a really tough tournament as I had only 15 days to get ready for it. Changing over to the 40x20 ball so quickly was very difficult and then after all the travelling it was a big challenge.”

Keegan will now switch his focus for the 2011 US Open in California for the doubles bracket alongside Limerick’s Seamus O’Carroll.
