Roscommon encountered few difficulties in seeing off the challenge of neighbours Leitrim 1-18 to 0-13 in the Connacht SFC quarter-final encounter at Hyde Park.
John Evans’ side laid the foundation for victory in an impressive opening and they were well on their way to a provincial semi-final meeting with champions Mayo when they led by 1-12 to 0-05 at the interval.
Roscommon used the wind in the opening half extremely well, delivering quality long ball into the full-forward line where Senan Kilbride and Ciaran Murtagh were outstanding.
They scored 0-05 between them from play and even Niall Daly and Ciaran Cafferkey went forward from the half-back line to find the range.
All of Leitrim’s scores in the opening half came from frees, with Emlyn Mulligan getting three and Conor Beirne landing a brace.
But Leitrim suffered two massive blows before the interval with midfielder Darren Sweeney picking up a black card for a late challenge and then Cathal Cregg, Ciaran Cafferkey and Ciaran Murtagh combined for Ronan Stack to fist home a goal and leave it 1-12 to 0-05 at the break.
Leitrim got back into the game in the third quarter when Kevin Conlon hit two long range frees and Mulligan got another one to reduce the margin 1o 1-13 to 0-9 after 46 minutes.
However, Leitrim needed a goal to get back into contention and that never looked like coming as Roscommon defended solidly.
Roscommon manager John Evans brought several of his successful U-21 side in the second-half and they extended their lead when half-back Niall Daly got his second point and Donie Shine hit a fine effort from play.
Mulligan led another revival by Leitrim with three points in succession to leave just five points between them with eight minutes left but they couldn’t get in a for a goal and Roscommon sealed their semi-final spot with two points from Diarmuid Murtagh and a good effort from Craig Burns.
