Kildare compounded Westmeath's misery as they emerged with a 17-point win in the Allianz Football League Division 1 match in Newbridge.

Both sides had already known their fate going into this encounter with relegation a certainty, and it was the Lilywhites that salvage some pride as Cathal McNally's goal helped Jason Ryan's side to a 1-22 to 0-08 success.

The home side had a 1-09 to 0-03 advantage at the break and tallied up a huge score against the disappointing Westmeath side.

Meanwhile, Kildare stalwart Johnny Doyle has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

Citing family commitments, Doyle said it had been a " great privilege" to wear the Kildare. jersey.
