Carlow midfielder Brendan Murphy will miss the start of the National Football League after suffering an injury playing for the Army.

The ex-Sydney Swan player suffered a lacerated kidney last month and, while the injury is not too serious, he has been told to avoid exercise.

New Carlow boss Anthony Rainbow said it would be March before they would expect Murphy, 23, to line out.

Meanwhile, defenders Padraig Murphy and Tony Bolger will miss the entire league campaign due to overseas duty with the army.
