Tommy Walsh insists that the time was right for him to turn his hand to Aussie Rules after signing a two-year contract with St Kilda.

The former Kerry forward made the decision on the back of his county’s All-Ireland triumph and revealed that the final victory over Cork was a deciding factor.

‘It is a big driving factor, to be able to wake up every day, put on your boots and that's your job,’ he said.

‘After Kerry won the All-Ireland this year, I knew it was the right time for me to leave.’

St Kilda recruiting manager Matthew Drain has been impressed by the speed with which Walsh has settled into life Down Under.

‘He has settled in well and certainly his attitude and his determination have been terrific so far. But you have to keep in mind that Tommy has come from an amateur sport, so the training seven days a week is taking some adapting,’ Drain said.
