Relegation-threatened Donegal took a giant step towards survival after they easily defeated Westmeath by 0-15 to 1-07 at Cusack Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Ulster men stormed into the lead in the early stages and led by 0-06 to 0-02 after 25 minutes.
And the contest would have been virtually over at half time had it not been for a Niall Kilcoyne goal in the 34th minute, which kept the home side in the game going into the second half, only a point behind the visitors.
Westmeath made a better start to the second half and levelled matters for a short period before four unanswered points from Rory Kavanagh, Ryan Bradley and two from Christy Toye secured the win for Donegal.
The result consigned Westmeath to Division 2 next season as Donegal must take something from their trip to Derry in two weeks’ time and hope that Dublin fail to beat Westmeath.
