Westmeath remain anchored at the bottom of the Allianz NFL Division 1 table after Tyrone’s smash and grab victory in Mullingar.
Tyrone started brightly, with points from David Harte, Sean Cavanagh and Niall Gormley giving the Red Hand outfit the early initiative.
Westmeath’s Conor Lynam, Niall Kilcoyne and Dennis Glennon, and the visitors’ Sean O’Neill added a number of superb points and the Ulster side led by 0-07 to 0-05 at the interval.
Cavanagh and Gleenon continued where they left off after the restart and their four scores saw Tyrone maintain their two-point buffer with the visitors leading 0-09 to 0-07.
Second-half goals from Michael Ennis and Glennon gave the Lakeside county the lead heading into the closing stages of the encounter, but Colm Cavanagh’s stoppage-time goal gave Mickey Harte’s All-Ireland champions their second victory of the campaign.
