The saga surrounding the appointment of the next Meath football manager has come to a conclusion with the ratification of Eamonn O’Brien.
O’Brien succeeds Colm Coyle almost four months after the Royal County’s disastrous All-Ireland qualifier defeat to Limerick and Coyle’s subsequent resignation.
A number of high-profile candidates rejected the opportunity to be considered for the post and O’Brien became the favourite to fill the post before Luke Dempsey’s potential appointment muddied the waters.
The former Westmeath and Longford supremo was the choice of a five-man selection committee, but his appointment was vetoed by the county’s management committee.
As a player, O’Brien represented Meath at inter-county level, winning a league medal in 1975 and claiming five All-Ireland club medals with Walterstown.
He went on to enjoy a successful stint in club management with Rathkenny as well as acting as a selector in Meath’s most recent All-Ireland triumphs in 1996 and 1999.
