Problems Viewing Content In Northern Ireland
RTÉ has negotiated rights with the GAA to stream live matches on RTÉ.ie within the entire Island of Ireland, thus making these matches available to viewers accessing content from within this territory. RTÉ must also restrict some on-demand content such as on-demand matches and some news content, to the Island of Ireland only.
Last season we received complaints from a number of users that, although they were trying to access content from locations within the Island of Ireland, they were being denied access. Several of these complaints were from our users in Northern Ireland.
RTÉ is required to use geo-blocking technology to restrict access to users within the Island of Ireland. Geoblocking works on the basis that each computer has an individual IP number which acts like an address. This number is supplied to the computer by the user's Internet Service Provider (ISP). Examples of ISPs are Eircom, BT, Smart Telecom, UTV, NTL and Irish Broadband.
Occasionally an IP address may be incorrectly identified as being outside the territory due to the address supplied by the ISP. Because of this the viewer gets a message stating they are not within the island of Ireland.
This is an error by the ISP and is not something within the control of RTÉ.
If this occurs, the viewer should contact their ISP, which in turn should contact RTÉ.ie to resolve the issue.
ISPs can contact RTÉ at onlinetechs@rte.ie. The ISP must include their AS number with any correspondence.
This information is available through the HELP option on the GAA Media Player, and in the FAQ section on the RTÉ.ie/live page at http://www.rte.ie/info/avfaq.html
