Wins for Down/Dublin: As It Happened
Reports:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A day of shocks at Croke Park, with both Kerry and Tyrone - the giants of the last decade - both eliminated. Dublin are in a semi-final for the first time since 2007, while Down are in the semis for the first time since 1994, the last time they won the Sam Maguire. An exciting Championship has just got even more so. Thanks for being with us today. Join us tomorrow for Cork v Roscommon and Meath v Kildare.
FULL-TIME: Tyrone 0-13 Dublin 1-15
1730 Michael Dara McAuley fists Dublin five clear. Normal time is almost up. Dublin will surely do it now, won't they?
1727 Conal Keaney extends Dublin's lead. Tyrone are in deep trouble now. Are they going to follow Kerry out of the Championship?
1726 Dublin are three in front and are five minutes from the semi-finals. Eoghan O'Gara is the hero as he rockets it past McConnell.
GOAL FOR DUBLIN!
1725 It's all-square at Croker. Mulligan points.
1721 Ten minutes to go at Croke Park.
1720 Tyrone are ragged in front of goal. Three wides in a row - from Cavanagh, Mulligan and McGuigan - brings their wides tally to 13.
1716 Penrose makes it a one-point game, pointing after Cavanagh wins a free.
1715 Dublin lead by two. Bernard Brogan gets his ninth point the game.
1713 Eoghan O'Gara's shot comes back off the upright and breaks for Bernard Brogan. It looks a great goal chance but he cracks it over the bar. Dublin back in front.
1712 Tyrone respond, and it's a brilliant score by Brian McGuigan. It just crept over, but they all count.
1710 Dublin are back in front. Alan Brogan feeds junior Brogan, and the result is predictable. Alan Brogan is subsequently withdrawn in a surprising substitution by the Dublin management.
1708 To borrow a phrase from RTÉ hurling analyst Cyril Farrell, 'it's in the melting pot, Ger'.
1707 The game is level for the fourth time. Alan Brogan gets his first point of the match. He was well-served by his brother who did the donkey work.
1705 The gap is back to one. Bernard Brogan gets his sixth of the game, and this time it's from play.
1705 Tyrone are racking up the wides. Nine at the last count.
1701 Tyrone open a two-point gap for the first time. Mulligan turns his marker and points off his right foot.
1659 The marauding half-back Jordan pops over a neat point for Tyrone. The Red Hand back in front.
1657 Bernard Brogan ties it up, again from a free.
1655 The second half is underway. Stephen O'Neill is on for Tyrone. Paul Flynn is on for Dublin.
Thanks for all the emails, folks.
Email: 'All credit to Dublin so far and lots of kudos to Pat Gilroy for having the bravery to make the wholesale changes that were needed after the last couple of years. I was at last week's game but have to be content to listen on-line from Tewksbury in Massachusetts this week.' - Alan Fagan
Email: 'Listening from Seoul, South Korea. Will be glued to RTE until after the Meath-Kildare game tomorrow. Didn't think much of Kildare, but their reign of terror through Ulster means I am really worried this bizarre Meath 2010 season will end soon. Great win for Down.' - Andrew, Republic of Korea
Email: 'Again the Ref takes centre stage. He is able to give Tyrone such easy frees yet Dublin need to be hit by a train before they seem to get a free. On the attendance at Croke Park!! Very Disappointing but I bet the GAA have some excuse for that other than the price of tickets!!!' - James McMacken
Email: 'Listening to the match online in shepparton victoria australia - dublin seem strong at the start and lets hope they can keep it up and can go all the way for sam.' - Stephen Cummins
1637 Massive let-off for Dublin. Martin Penrose's shot comes crashing off the Dublin crossbar. Cavanagh's attempt to point the follow-up is blocked and after that late first-half drama the referee blows for half-time.
1636 Just as Bernard Brogan was drawing frees for Dublin earlier, now Cavanagh is drawing them for Tyrone. But Mickey Harte's side fail to capitalise this time, as Mulligan, after a quickly taken free, screws his shot wide.
1634 Penrose, from a free just inside the 45-metre line, puts Tyrone in front. That's his fourth point of the game.
1633 Nobody seems to want to take the lead before half-time. Penrose misses a very scorable opportunity for Tyrone, before Alan Brogan emulates him at the other end.
1630 Great response by Dublin. Philip McMahon hits a monster point to level it up again.
1629 A half-hour gone and Tyrone go into the lead for the first time. Philip Jordan with the point.
1627 Tyrone have a foothold in the game now. They snuff out a Dublin attack and break in numbers. Cavanagh is fouled and Mulligan ties it up.
1625 Two in a row from Mulligan. This time he points from play, firing it over his right shoulder. Fine score.
1623 Owen Mulligan narrows the gap to two points. From a free.
1622 Free to Tyrone. Point by Penrose.
1621 Dublin lead by four. McCarron gives away another free and Bernard Brogan taps it over.
1619 Goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton extends Dublin's lead from a free. A mini-melee ensues, sparked between Alan Brogan and Pascal McConnell. This game has needle now.
1617 Seán Cavanagh seems very isolated at full-forward for Tyrone. It's certainly not working for them so far.
1616 Penrose gets his and Tyrone's second point. This time from play.
1615 Bernard Brogan is causing the Tyrone defenders some difficulty. He draws the foul from Cathal McCarron and sticks over the resulting free.
1612 Dublin will be happy enough with this so far. Twelve minutes in, they're leading, and Tyrone haven't settled at all yet.
1608 Tyrone finally get on the scoreboard. Owen Mulligan is fouled and Martin Penrose points the resulting free.
1606 Bryan Cullen puts his name on the scoreboard as Dublin make a very strong start. Tyrone yet to score.
1604 Good start for the Dubs. Bernard Brogan again from a free.
1601 Bernard Brogan gets Dublin off the mark with a free after his brother is fouled by Ryan McMenamin.
1600 Underway in today's second quarter-final at Croke Park.
1550 Tyrone v Dublin team line-ups:
Tyrone:
Pascal McConnell; Cathal McCarron, Justin McMahon, Ryan McMenamin; Davy Harte, Conor Gormley, Philip Jordan; Colm Cavanagh, Kevin Hughes; Brian Dooher, Brian McGuigan, Joe McMahon; Martin Penrose, Seán Cavanagh, Owen Mulligan
Dublin:
Stephen Cluxton; Michael Fitzsimons, Rory O'Carroll, Philip McMahon; Kevin Nolan, Gerard Brennan, Barry Cahill; Michael Dara McAuley, Ross McConnell; Bryan Cullen, Alan Brogan, Niall Corkery; David Henry, Eoghan O'Gara, Bernard Brogan
1545 Next up it's Tyrone v Dublin. That throws in at 4pm.
1535 Maybe Down won't see it this way, but that's still a major shock. Down's hoodoo over Kerry in the Championship continues, and one has to say that they fully deserved their victory today. Down will play either Meath or Kildare in the semi-finals.
RESULT: KERRY 1-10 DOWN 1-16
1533 Consolation goal for Kerry with David Moran's expertly-dispatched penalty after a foul on Donaghy. But the referee blows for full-time and a major surprise has occurred as Down dump Kerry, the defending champions, out of the Championship.
PENALTY TO KERRY
1532 Down now eight clear. Make that nine actually. The last point coming from Rodgers.
1528 Martin Clarke scores his fourth of the match with another free. Down are seven clear, with three minutes to go. Surely Kerry can't come back from this?
1527 Four minutes to go. Are Kerry gone?!
1526 Free-in to Kerry but it could have been much worse for Down. Gooch spots Donaghy whose close-range shot is stopped brilliantly by McVeigh. Gooch points.
1524 Make that a seven-point lead for Down. Substitute Ronan Murtagh with a long-range score.
1523 With Gooch for Kerry, read Coulter for Down. Another excellent point by the Mourne side's talisman. It's Down's to lose now...
1521 Coulter stretches Down's lead to five points. Ten minutes of normal time left.
1519 Very tight angle but Down substitute Conor Maginn still manages to steer over a lovely point.
1515 Fifteen minutes to go and Down lead by three. This is really interesting now.
1512 I was about to type 'goal for Down', with a lot of accompanied exclamation marks, but it was ruled out for a thrown pass by Coulter. Kerry race down the field and Gooch puts Donaghy clean through but his shot is well saved by McVeigh. Sheehan points the resulting '45.
1508 Gooch is keeping Kerry in this single-handedly. Another free; another point.
1507 Walsh gets his second yellow for a round-the-neck pull on Poland. Kerry are down to 14 men.
RED CARD - DONNACHA WALSH (KERRY)
1506 Seamus Scanlon is replaced by Barry John Keane for Kerry. That's both of Kerry's starting midfielders replaced now.
1505 Gooch gets his fifth point. Right foot, left foot - it never really matters to the great Colm Cooper.
1503 Great response by Down. Diagonal ball is picked up by McCumiskey and he sends over a beautiful point off his right foot.
1502 Sheehan with a free for Kerry. Five points in it.
Email: Liz O'Sullivan from Killarney has emailed us to ask us to 'ask the panel to have a look at the disallowed goal again and see if it was Gooch's pass to Walsh that was called as the illegal hand pass and NOT Walsh's to Young?'
Logistically that's not possible for us to do, Liz, but you do ask an interesting question.
1459 Gooch with a free for Kerry. Their first score since the 21st minute of the match.
1457 Down continue where they left off. Martin Clarke with a free close in.
1456 The second half is underway. Kerry have moved Kieran Donaghy out to midfield.
Studio-watch: The RTÉ panellists (Spillane/Brolly/O'Rourke) are agreed that Killian Young's goal should have stood. They're also agreed that Kerry need to seriously improve in the second half if they're going to rescue this. Down's Martin Clarke is also coming in for widespread praise, particularly from Brolly.
1436 Kerry haven't scored for 15 minutes.
1434 Kerry have reacted by replacing Mícheál Quirke with David Moran.
1433 Poland again, this time with a beautiful strike off his left foot after some dogged ball-retention efforts by Daniel Hughes. That's 1-02 for Poland so far today.
1432 Down's good spell continues and Poland extends their lead with a free after a shirt-tug on McCumiskey.
1428 Martin Clarke again, this time from a very tight angle. That's a good response from Down, after what was a period of intense domination by Kerry.
1427 Martin Clarke answers the call for Down. Fine point from a '45.
1426 Down haven't scored since the 10th minute of the game. They're still two points ahead but they need something badly as Kerry have finally settled.
1422 A slick move by Kerry ends up with Killian Young smashing the ball past Down's Brendan McVeigh but the referee rules it out on the basis of what he deemed to be an illegal hand-pass from Donnacha Walsh to Young. Seems harsh. Let-off for Down.
1421 Another free for Kerry. Another point for Cooper. Down's fantastic start seems a long time ago now...
1419 Free to Kerry. Point by Cooper. The Kingdom are finally beginning to motor.
1416 First time we've seen Colm Cooper in the game. And, dependable as ever, he pops over a lovely point off his right foot after a neat sidestep.
1415 Four wides for Kerry to just one for Down so far.
1414 Finally. Kerry are off the mark. Donaghy wins possession, offloads to Sheehan and this time he makes no mistake.
1413 And yet another wide by Sheehan. He had time and space, but again he's off target.
1412 Twelve minutes in and Kerry have yet to score. I never thought I'd have to type that line. Very odd.
1409 Fantastic point out on the right from Paul McCumiskey. It was a tight one but it looked to have just squeezed inside the point.
1408 Another wide from Sheehan, this time from a free. A subdued start by the Kingdom, and they'll also be concerned that Declan O'Sullivan is receiving treatment on his ankle.
1406 It's wet and greasy at Croke Park and it's suiting the Ulster outfit at the moment.
1406 Chance for Kerry but captain Bryan Sheehan drags his effort wide. You'd have expected better from Sheehan there.
1404 Point for Down. Ambrose Rodgers from a '45. Kerry haven't got going at all yet.
1404 Kerry have never beaten Down in the Championship, remember. An omen, perhaps?
1403 Great start for Down. Benny Coulter tacks on a point and it's so far so good for James McCartan's side.
1401 Goal for Down! Mark Poland in the first minute of the game capitalises on some very sloppy play by Mícheál Quirke and Tom O'Sullivan and has a free run on goal to smash the ball past Brendan Kealy.
1400 Game on.
1358 RTÉ studio pundits' predictions:
Pat Spillane: Kerry
Joe Brolly: Kerry
Colm O'Rourke: Kerry
