Sheehan to land Kerry captaincy
Bryan Sheehan is expected to lead Kerry in 2010 after his club, St Mary's of Cahirciveen, beat Skellig Rangers to claim the South Kerry SFC title on Sunday.
Played at Cahirciveen's Con Keating Park, a Maurice Fitzgerald-inspired St Mary's emerged 1-07 to 0-09 victors in a keenly contested match, and with South Kerry winning the overall county title, Mary's will have the honour of nominating their candidacy for captain.
Sheehan is the only current Mary's player on the Kerry panel, so it is widely expected the forward will receive the nod for 2010, taking over from Glenbeigh-Glencar's Darran O'Sullivan.
Veteran Fitzgerald scored 1-01 to lead Mary's to a one-point win, his fortuitous 25th-minute shot from distance dropping under Michael Brennan's bar and into the net to give Mary's a 1-04 to 0-04 half-time lead.
Elsewhere, six points from Colm Cooper helped Dr Crokes claim the East Kerry Championship for the 25th time with a 0-14 to 0-09 win over Gneeveguilla at Killarney's Fitzgerald Stadium.
In the North Kerry Championship, Listowel Emmets retained their title with a 0-12 to 0-11 victory over Finuge in Ballybunion.
