Tipperary star forward Eoin Kelly is nearing a return to fitness, but won't play any part in Sunday's National Hurling League clash with Kilkenny.

Kelly, who missed much of the league campaign with a back injury, is back in training but remains some way from being match fit.

'Obviously he won't see any action on Sunday but we would be confident that he is heading in the right direction', manager Liam Sheedy said.

'The back is the back, it's slow and he just needs to get time. We've given it time and it's great to see him back in the squad training last night, but obviously the weekend has come just too soon for him.'

Sheedy will also be without Conor O'Mahony and Willie Ryan for Sunday's clash, however, he believes his squad is strong enough to cope.

'I always said it, but for us to be competitive, we need two guys pushing for every position. We have a long injury list, but we want to focus and all our energy will be on the guys we have available to us,' he said.

'We are really focusing on our performance and also playing to our potential because we were disappointed we didn't play to our potential in Nowlan Park the last day.'
