A brace of goals from Colm Cooper earned Kerry a modicum of revenge against Tyrone in this Allianz NFL Division 1 clash in Omagh.
Both Cooper's goals came inside the opening 13 minutes as Kerry raced out of the traps against the side that toppled them in last year's All-Ireland final.
The goals helped them to a 2-08 to 0-03 half-time lead, and although the hosts produced a valiant comeback with six unanswered points, they weren't able to haul back the deficit.
Kerry got off to a flier and points from Darren O'Sullivan, Paul Galvin, who had an excellent first half, and a Cooper free had the visitors three points ahead before Sean Cavanagh put Tyrone on the board with a free of his own.
Cooper's first goal came in the ninth minute when he gained possession and turned well before sneaking a shot past Jonathan Curran in the Tyrone goal.
The Dr Crokes clubman the added another free before he reacted quickest to a ball into the danger area to punch past the helpless Curran.
Cooper's double had Kerry leading by 2-04 to 0-01 and had Tyrone staring at a heavy defeat.
It was worse a few minutes later for the Red Hands when they had full-back Justin McMahon shown a yellow card.
The Kerry onslaught tailed off after that and a fine point by centre-forward Colm McCullagh offered some hope of a Tyrone riposte as they headed in at the break.
The hosts were boosted soon after the interval when Kerry centre-back picked up a yellow card and had to be replaced by Finuge's Maurice Corridan.
Mickey Harte's men made the good use of O'Mahony's absence and points from Owen Mulligan, Sean Cavanagh (four frees) and Joe McMahon brought Tyrone to within five points before Kerry corner-back Killian Young saw yellow.
Kerry substitute Bryan Sheehan steadied their nerves with a point, but they soon lost another man to a yellow card when Aidan O'Shea also needed to replaced.
Cavanagh converted a late free and Philip Jordan also got his name on the scoresheet before the end, but Tyrone's resistance fell just short.
