Player grants could go

Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism Martin Cullen has admitted the payment of next year's GAA players' grants is under threat.

Mr Cullen told the Dáil that €3.5 million had been provided to pay this year's grants but the future funding was in question due to current economic constraints and the reduction in the Irish Sports Council's budget for 2009.

Last year, a deal was agreed between the Gaelic Players' Association, the GAA and the ISC to fund two schemes to meet costs for senior inter-county players.

Mr Cullen was responding to a question from Fine Gael TD and Mayo manager John O'Mahony, who said the principle of player grants should be maintained whatever the budgetary constraints.
