Championship debutant David Tubridy landed five points as Clare outfought Waterford in a forgettable Munster SFC quarter-final in Ennis this afternoon.

Avenging last year's defeat to the same opposition, Clare scored the game's final three points through Tubridy (0-02) and Stephen Hickey to tee up a trip to All-Ireland champions Kerry.

Playing into a stiff wind, Waterford only trailed by 0-04 to 0-03 at half-time with Connie Power and Liam Ó Lionain both pointing.

Successive scores from Power and Gary Hurney edged the Deise ahead but they crumbled in the closing stages, losing defender Justin Walsh to a red card.

Both teams lined out as selected during the week, with Tubridy and Sean Collins debuting at this level for Clare and Waterford notably benefiting from the inclusion of dual players Hurney and Liam Lawlor.

In front of a small crowd, Clare grabbed the early initiative in the counties' 27th Munster Championship clash.

Aided by a strong breeze at their backs, Frank Doherty's men edged into a 0-02 to 0-00 lead with the 20-year-old Tubridy successful from frees after two and six minutes.

Power, who scored a decisive 1-09 when the sides met in the league recently, opened his account in the 11th minute when he pointed a close range free after being fouled himself.

With the powerfully-built Hurney taking on the captain's role, Waterford were winning the lion's share of possession around centre-field.

But both sides struggled for scores and indeed neither of them could land a point from play until Liam Ó Lionain succeeded with a deflected effort in the 34th minute.

The fare was particularly poor and not up to Championship standard but there was enough of a battle for the crowd to get their teeth into, with a 17th-minute Power free levelling the tie at 0-02 apiece.

O Lionain's point from play, which was helped on its way by Clare goalkeeper Joe Hayes, saw Waterford hit the front but it was an all too brief lead for John Kiely's charges.

Clare bounced back before the break with Ger Quinlan and Stephen Hickey both pointing from play, with the latter's score from a tight angle out on the left undoubtedly the best of a disappointing half.

Once again, the shooting at both ends of the pitch continued to let players down as the second half got underway.

Waterford posted two wides and Clare one before Banner wing-back John Hayes sallied forward in the 42nd minute and rifled over to put two points between the sides.

With the wind advantage though, Waterford soon put together their best spell of the match as they landed four successive points to take a 0-07 to 0-05 lead.

Power popped a 20 metre free between the posts for his third point of the afternoon and he levelled at 0-05 apiece - in the 58th minute - after Waterford 'keeper Tom Wall had denied Alan Clohessy at the other end.

While they continued to struggle in open play, the Deise's attack were able to draw the fouls which allowed Hurney (60 minutes) and Power (65) to give the visitors a two-point buffer.

By that stage, Clare were in danger of losing their grip on the game having struck 13 wides to Waterford's wides tally of five.

However, Walsh's sending-off brought about the start of a Clare revival.

Tubridy first kicked his third point from a free and, in the 68th minute, the Doonbeg youngster then drew the sides level for the fourth time when he converted left-footed after being teed up by David Russell.

Clare held their nerve in injury-time to see out the win as Tubridy pointed again from a free - after John Hayes had been fouled in possession - and a Hickey score from close range put the final nail in Waterford's coffin.
