Finalists dominate Camogie All Stars

All Ireland Champions Wexford and finalists Galway earned six All Stars apiece at the 8th annual Camogie All Stars on Saturday night.

JJ Doyle, who led Wexford to All Ireland Senior and Intermediate success in September, was also named as the O’Neills Manager of the Year.

Winning Wexford captain Ursula Jacob, defensive duo Claire O’Connor and Catherine O’Loughlin and forwards Una Leacy, Katrina Parrock and Kate Kelly all added a second consecutive award.

Galway’s inspirational centre back Therese Maher, Ann Marie Hayes and Lorraine Ryan took three of the defensive slots while Galway goalkeeper Susan Earner collected her first All Star award. Captain Brenda Hanney secured a place in the full forward line with midfielder Niamh Kilkenny taking a centre-field berth.

The remaining positions went to Munster with Cork’s Anna Geary once again securing the wing-back spot while Jennifer O’Leary, topped off a fine season, with an award at wing-forward. Tipperary midfielder Jill Horan was chosen for an All Star midfield award.

Speaking at Saturday's awards, president of the Camogie Association Joan O’Flynn said:

“Tonight tops off another fantastic year for Camogie as the country’s leading players take centre stage. Congratulations to all of those who received a nomination and to those who were awarded an All Star, Soaring Star and Intermediate Soaring Star.

"In addition, congratulations to the 2011 O’Neills Manager of the Year, JJ Doyle on his wonderful achievement of leading two teams to All Ireland glory.

"The All Star awards are a prestigious individual accolade cherished amongst players, rewarding top class displays of skill, athleticism, talent and commitment throughout the season.

"Tonight provides us all with a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the magnificent achievements of our leading players and to reward their dedication and contribution to the game, on a national stage. "
