David Burke has been named as the new captain of the Galway senior hurling side.

The St Thomas' clubman, an All Star winner in 2012 and 2015 will lead the county in their opening Allianz League match against Cork on Sunday week. He was vice-captain in 2014, a year when Joe Canning was skipper. In a reversal of roles, Canning will serve as vice-captain for the season ahead.

The Tribesmen begin the new campaign with Michael Donoghue now at the helm following on from the somwehat messy departure of Anthony Cunningham last autumn.

They'll be looking for a first league title since 2010, while also eyeing another productive run in the championship after reaching last September's All-Ireland decider.
