Walsh brothers to attend controversial camp
Thursday, 14 August 2008Ricky Nixon's AFL recruitment camp in Co Mayo in two weeks is 'on schedule' according to the scout.
Nixon has created consternation in GAA circles with his plans to
recruit Irish Gaelic footballers for a number of AFL teams and today's news is especially sobering for All-Ireland champions Kerry.
Nixon has confirmed that senior stars Tommy Walsh and David Moran - sons of Kerry stalwarts Sean Walsh and 'Ogie' Moran - will be at Breaffy's International Sports Hotel for the two-day camp on Tuesday, 26 August and Wednesday, 27 August.
'Tommy and David will be there,' Nixon told RTÉ News, 'and I've also invited Tommy's brother Barry John too.'
Barry John is the younger of the Walsh brothers and the free-scoring full-forward has starred in Kerry's run to the All-Ireland minor semi-final.
Some of the best young footballers in the country are on the list.
Donegal supporters won't like to see Michael Murphy's name there, and there will be a pang of anxiety in Laois that Donie Kingston has found his name on an invitation too.
Arguably the biggest surprise is the appearance of Monaghan's Dessie Mone on Nixon's wish list. While Mone is not for his agility and aggression, his age profile is older than most.
According to the Star newspaper today, the following players are due to appear at the camp: Tommy Walsh and David Moran (Kerry), Michael Murphy (Donegal), Donal Kingston (Laois), Kevin Nolan (Dublin), Brendan Boggs, Colm Cavanagh and Peter Hughes (Tyrone), Colm Murney and Paul McComiskey (Down), James Kielt and Neil Forrester (Derry), Niall McKeever and Thomas McCann (Antrim), Dessie Mone (Monaghan), Brian Sheridan (Meath), Ian Ryan (Limerick), Ciaran Nolan.
