Review of ladies' football action
Sunday, 9 March 2008 19:10Just four games went ahead in the Suzuki Ladies National Leagues with re-arranged fixtures from the opening round of matches been played.
Mayo's reign as League champions is over as they lost at home in Kilfin as they lost 1-10 to 1-06.
This game went ahead in dreadful conditions and Tyrone with Cathy Donnelly and Ailish Gormley prominent opened up a three-point lead aided by the gale force breeze.
Gemma Begley fed Ailish Gormley with a probing ball as Tyrone struck for a decisive goal on 15 minutes.
Mayo gave themselves a lifeline with a spectacular response from Fiona McHale as she embarked on a 35-yard solo run before blasting to the net.
Trailing 1-06 to 1-02 at the break, it still seemed the league champions would have the where-with-all to grab the points but Mayo squandered several opportunities from play and missed some scoreable frees.
Lisa Caffrekey and Aoife Herbery reduced the gap to three points but Tyrone were always able to keep their noses in front as their All Star Gemma Begley top scored with four points.
They will now fight it out with their Ulster neighbours Armagh next weekend to see who will book second spot in their group. Kerry look assured of topping Division 1A as they have home advantage against relegated Wexford who were walloped at home by Laois.
Meanwhile, Waterford booked their spot in the Division 2 semi finals as they easily saw off Leitrim.
This game was originally cancelled due to bad weather and the travelling contingent had another taste of the blues following a thumping in sun-splashed Lemybrien.
The Deise side began with a flurry of points from Cliona O'Keefee, Sinead Ryan, Michelle Ryan, Mairead Wall and Marion Ryan as they established a five-point lead inside the opening quarter hour.
Eva McGovern and Grainne Kinneally were dominant in defence for Waterford and restricted Leitrim to a solitary score with Naomi Lee scoring a point for the westerners just before the break. Kathy Hannon and Sinead Ryan scores gave Waterford a handy half-time lead of 0-08 to 0-01.
A flurry of goals inside the opening ten minutes ensured an emphatic win for Waterford with Michelle Ryan scoring early on in the second half to finish the game as a contest.
Sinead Ryan and Kathy Hannon also scored goals as the visitors offered little resistance and the Intermediate All-Ireland champions' only bright note was a late consolation goal for Clare Nolan.
