GPA claims 90 per cent in favour of strike
Wednesday, 31 October 2007 17:10GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell has said that he expects 90 per cent of inter-county players to vote in favour of strike action over the deadlocked grants issue.
The ballot of inter-county players was due to close today, but it was agreed by the GPA to extend the closure date to 7 November.
Ironically, the ballot was extended as Northern Ireland members were experiencing delays in receiving their ballot papers due to the recent postal strike.
Over 1,800 players have been balloted, and unless the impasse is overcome in the next week, the first national strike in the history of the GAA will come to pass shortly after the closing date.
'I would imagine having done our homework beforehand and having all squads contacted and reported back to us, I don't think there will be an issue on it,' Farrell said about the vote on www.hoganstand.com.
He added: 'It is very much a last resort and the players do not want to engage in this kind of activity, but nonetheless if it needs to be, it needs to be.'
