In a tight, niggly game, the French substitute Patrick Battiston suddenly found himself in space and running onto a throughball, when from nowhere, the onrushing German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher attempted to decapitate him in what could only be considered the most brutal tackle in World Cup history.

Battiston lost three teeth, was knocked unconscious and swallowed his tongue, while amazingly the referee took no action except to award West Germany a goalkick.

Germany went on to win the tie after a penalty shootout, when Schumacher made a crucial save.

In a poll in France following the tournament, Schumacher was voted Most Hated Man in the World, ahead of Adolf Hitler!
