Germany had tried in vain to break down a resolute Argentinean defence for the early part of the game, but had come up short-changed.

However, things changed dramatically when Jurgen Klinsmann picked up the ball on the right wing and tried to go past Pedro Monzon, who appeared to barely tip his ankle.

Klinsmann hurled himself to the floor, and rolled around in what many believed to have been mock agony. Monzon was sent-off as he became the first player to be red-carded in a World Cup final.

Germany went on to win 1-0 thanks to a dubious penalty decision but it was Klinsmann's moment of theatrics which turned the game.
