Wexford's Bertram Allen, who has just turned 19 this month, collected €40,000 for a spectacular second place in the Longines King George V Gold Cup competition at Hickstead, England on Sunday.

Riding Billy Twomey's stallion Romanov, the Irish teenager went clear all the way in the show's major feature class, and was beaten by just over a second in the final round by US star Beezie Madden and Cortes "C", who picked up the prestigious trophy and prize money of €66,000 for their first place.

Ireland also saw Tipperary's Shane Breen finish fifth in the class with Golden Hawk, clear rounds giving him prize money of €12,000.

On Saturday, Shane's brother Trevor won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Hickstead on Adventure de Kannan.
