Ryan shines on Horse Show final day
Sunday, 9 August 2009 20:02Swiss based Thomas Ryan was the best of the Irish in the Longines Grand Prix at the Dublin Horse Show this afternoon (Sunday) with a seventh place on the 12 year-old gelding Urleven van de Helle.
The Tipperary native was the only local rider to make it through to the jump-off and recorded one of only seven double clears from the 40-strong field.
However, the speed of Toni Hassmann and 'Lolita' left the rest of the field standing in the second round, and the German winner collected the prize purse of €66,500 and the Longines trophy.
Earlier Frenchman Roger-Yves Bost won the Dublin Speed Championship with Jovis de Ravel, cementing his position as the show's Leading Rider, but the Army Equitation School's Capt. Shane Carey took third place with the Irish-bred River Folyle, and collected the Leading Irish Rider Award in the event's closing ceremony.
