Three-time world champion Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams lost his BDO World Championship opener to teenage Dutch debutant Jimmy Hendriks on Sunday.

The veteran England captain, who was the second seed for the tournament, has been struggling for form this season and struggled to hit his doubles throughout the contest at Frimley Green.

Hendriks’ 3-2 victory ensured that there will be a be a new winner of the Lakeside event, as the other former champions – Christian Kist and John Walton – have already suffered first-round exits.

First seed Stephen Bunting went to five sets before winning his clash with Jamie Wilson.

The 27-year-old was a 3-2 winner, eventually coming through having trailed 2-1 at one stage.

Tournament favourite Scott Mitchell saw off Mark Barilli 3-2, Jan Dekker shaded an all-Dutch clash with Jeffrey de Graaf 3-2, Wesley Harms defeated Rune David 3-1 and Steve Douglas beat Gary Stone 3-1 less than a month after suffering a heart attack.
