Osborne eases through at the Palace

Colin Osborne saw off World Championship debutant Chris Thompson 3-1 to secure his place in the second round of the PDC Ladbrokes.com event at the Alexandra Palace.

'The Wizard' took the first set 3-1 despite missing three shots at a double to win against the throw in the second leg - finding his range in the fourth leg as Thompson laboured in trying to hit double 10.

The second set was equally comfortable for Osborne, who, despite needing seven attempts to hit double five to take the second leg, again took the set 3-1.

Thompson hit back to take the third set by the same scoreline, though, finally discovering some momentum as he picked up his first maximum and landed a 177 to leave himself a double-eight checkout in the fourth leg.

Six failed attempts at double six cost Thompson the opening leg of the fourth set and Osborne nipped in to win against the throw, before wrapping up the set 3-1.

Kevin McDine crushed Barrie Bates 3-1 in a dismal tussle between the world numbers 23 and 36.

Neither player was at their best in the opening set, with the first two legs going against the throw before McDine managed to thread some form together to take the set 3-2 with a closing double seven.

Bates was desperately struggling to hit his doubles and that cost him the throw in the opening game of the second set, while McDine brought up the 150th maximum of the tournament as he closed out the second set 3-1.

Doubles were proving problematic for both players and McDine laboured to move 2-1 ahead in the third set, only for Bates to hit back and win 3-2.

However, McDine kept his nerve to find some success on the doubles and move into the second round with a 120 checkout to finish.
