Nicolas Roche has taken the leader's red jersey at the Tour of Spain, La Vuelta, after a strong finish to the summit at Estepona Alto Penas Blancas.

Czech Leopold Koenig took a solo win in stage eight, attacking with two kilometres to go to claim the win as Spain's Dani Moreno was second with Roche in third.

Following the Vuelta a Espana's third summit finish, Roche now leads the race with American Chris Horner in second, 17 seconds behinds Roche and Moreno third.

Previous overall leader Vincenzo Nibali suffered in the final kilometres of the climb, losing around 30 seconds to the stage winner and dropping to fourth overall.

Dan Martin, Ireland's other rider in this year's race, had to withdraw following a crash on Friday's stage.

The Tour finishes on 15 September in Madrid.
