Ireland's Caroline Ryan placed fifth in the Women's 3km pursuit at the World Track Cycling Championships in Belarus – just missing out on a medal ride.

She clocked a time of three minutes 38.269 seconds, around eight seconds down on world record holder Sarah Hammer of the USA, who qualified fastest.

Hammer will meet Amy Cure in the final after the Australian's heat ride of 3:33.366.

Ryan paced herself well in the opening laps of the pursuit, with a steady opening kilometre. This set her up well for the remainder of the race, where she steadily increased her position in the leader board.

Less than half a second outside fourth placed Brown of Canada, Ryan attained her goal of achieving a top five result in the world.
