Bronze for Ireland in Colombia

The Irish team took its second bronze medal in the Para-cycling Pan-American Championships when Enda Smyth had a strong performance in the 1km individual time trial in Cali, Colombia.

The Dubliner finished third in the CP4 category when he recorded a time of 1 minute 16.857 seconds, a full 1.92 seconds quicker than his previous Irish record which was set at this year’s World Championships in Bordeaux.

Irish riders took two more top ten pacings when the women’s tandem duo of Catherine Walsh and Joanna Hickey were ninth in the 3km individual pursuit, covering the distance in 4 minutes 5.119 seconds.

LC1 rider Cathal Miller then completed the 1 km individual TT in 1 minute 14.956 seconds, netting tenth.

Smyth’s performance follows the bronze medal won earlier this week by Michael Delaney and David Peelo in the 4km individual pursuit. The performances thus far have copper fastened a second Irish slot for next year’s Paralympic Games in Beijing, the main aim for the team at these championships.
