Defending champion David O'Loughlin retained his national title when he raced to an excellent solo victory in today's Road Race Championships in Dundrod in Lisburn.

O'Loughlin was clear with two previous double champions Mark Scanlon and David McCann, plus seven other riders for most of the day, with the three then pressing ahead in the second half of the race.

Each seemed equally matched, but O'Loughlin chose his moment perfectly to pull clear, leaving the other two to fight it out for sliver and bronze.

Scanlon beat McCann in their sprint to the line, while Paudie O'Brien finished behind another past winner in Tommy Evans in fifth and took the best U-23 classification.

O'Loughlin now joins Scanlon and McCann as a two-time champion.
