Black Caps trail Proteas

New Zealand lost both openers in the evening session to end day one of the first Test in South Africa at 41 for two - trailing their hosts by 185 runs.

First Michael Papps got an outside edge to AB de Villiers at third slip off a Makhaya Ntini delivery for two and then Craig Cumming was trapped leg before wicket playing across the line to Dale Steyn.

Stephen Fleming finished the day unbeaten on 22 along with nightwatchman Shane Bond, who successfully dealt with eight balls without scoring.

Earlier, the hosts won the toss and posted a disappointing return of 226, with Herschelle Gibbs (63) and Mark Boucher (43) the main contributors.

Bond played a starring role with the ball for the tourists with four for 73, with Chris Martin claming three for 67 and captain Daniel Vettori two for 26.

Skipper Graeme Smith fell for one and Hashim Amla managed just 12 before Jacques Kallis failed to make the most of two lives.

He managed only 29 despite being dropped twice, with opener Gibbs the only South Africa batsman to make much of an early impression.

Smith got his side off to the worst possible start as he was dismissed for a single, playing on to a ball from Martin.

And, despite hitting the only six of the session with a nonchalant clip off his legs, Amla soon followed, as a Bond delivery flicked his glove and found the safe hands of Brendon McCullum.
South Africa struggled for runs, with opener Gibbs unusually subdued.

Martin should have claimed a second wicket in the first session, but Papps dropped a chance at second slip off a ball that reared up at Kallis.

And it was Martin who was again the unlucky bowler in the final over before the interval when Iain O'Brien failed to hold onto a mistimed pull shot from Kallis at fine leg.

Kallis reached lunch unbeaten on 29 but an excellent catch from McCullum from the first delivery after the interval meant he could not add to his score.

O'Brien atoned for his earlier drop by inducing an inside edge, with McCullum diving back to his left to pouch a difficult, low catch.

Ashwell Prince (one) soon followed, edging Bond to Fleming at first slip, leaving Gibbs and De Villiers to dig in.

They contributed 49 together before Gibbs became Martin's second victim.

Again Fleming took the catch after a rare injudicious stroke from Gibbs found its way to first slip.

De Villiers fell in the second over of the final session without adding to his score of 33 to give Bond his third wicket and expose the Proteas' lengthy tail.

Bond then removed Andre Nel for 15 thanks to another catch from McCullum, before Vettori took his first wicket by trapping Paul Harris lbw.

Papps showed none of his earlier profligacy when he caught Boucher at point to give his skipper a second and Martin rounded things off by dismissing Steyn thanks to McCullum's fourth catch of the innings.
