David Oliver Joyce admitted to feeling some pressure to win gold at the European Union Elite Championships in Sofia but knew he had done the hard work in advance.

The St Michael’s Athy lightweight added his latest medal to featherweight golds at this level in 2008 and 2009 by beating Georgia’s Otar Eranosyan on Saturday.

“It’s a tough tournament," Joyce told RTÉ Sport. "We knew going out there after the back of [winning gold at] the Chemistry Cup that there was a bit of pressure in this tournament to get another gold medal so it made it a little bit tougher going out there.

“I had four tough fights. I knew I had the fitness, and the hard work was put in in the gym.

“The medals are all the same to me, it’s just that it’s been a while now, it’s 2009 since the last one was won.

“It’s been a bit of a break so it’s nice to get the gold medal back in Ireland again.”
