Irish heavyweight Tommy McCarthy has turned professional with the same stable which signed John Joe Nevin last October.

“I am looking forward to the new challenge ahead in the professional boxing ranks,” said McCarthy, who is ninth in the AIBA world rankings. “America is the best in the world for boxing.”

He will fight in America and the UK and could make his pro debut on St Patrick’s Day at the House of Blues in Boston on a card including NevinOpponents have yet to be named for both boxers.

23-year-old McCarthy reached the last eight at the World Championships in Kazakhstan last October and is a former Commonwealth Games silver-medallist. He had been was boxing out of the Oliver Plunkett BC in Belfast.

Green Blood’s Tom Moran called McCarthy a great addition to the stable. “I’m really looking forward to working with Tommy and watching him progress into a world champion,” Moran said.

“This year will be an exciting year for Irish fight fans and for our boxers.”
