Mayo’s Ciara Ginty will receive the AIBA Best World Junior Female Boxer of the Year Award in Almaty, Kazakhstan tonight.

The Geesala BC stand out claimed lightweight Junior gold and the Boxer of the Tournament Award at the second AIBA World Women’s Youth and Junior Championships in Albena, Bulgaria last month.

The 15-year-old beat Turkey’s Esra Yildiz on a unanimous decision in the 60kg final in Bulgaria.

Ginty will be presented with her award by AIBA President Dr CK Wu at tonight’s finals banquet for the 17th AIBA World Elite Men’s Championships.

AIBA World No. 1 Katie Taylor is the only other Irish boxer to win an AIBA World Boxer of the Year Award. Taylor has claimed the elite award three times.

Gessala BC coach Pat McDonagh, who is in Almaty with Ginty, said it was a massive honour for the club to have one of its boxers receive this prestigious international award.
