Irish boxer John Joe Nevin is to officially turn professional next Tuesday.

The 2012 Olympic silver medallist had been named in a ten-man Ireland squad for the current World Championships in Kazakhstan but subsequently declared his intention to turn to the pro ranks.

Last October the Mullingar man also announced that he would leave the amateur ranks before changing his mind and winning gold at the European Championships in Belarus in June.

Nevin said: “I’m excited to be going on a new journey in the pro ranks. I became world number one as an amateur and now my goal is to become number one in the professional.

“I’m ready to give everything I have to become a world champion and bring the title belt back to Ireland.”
