Tommy McCarthy will get Ireland’s campaign at the 17th AIBA World Boxing Championships underway in Almaty, Kazakhstan today.

The Belfast heavyweight meets Nikolay Mutavski of Bulgaria at 1530.

Four Irish boxers, Michael Conlan (2), Paddy Barnes (5), Jason Quigley (5) and Joe Ward (6), were seeded in today’s draw. All four have received byes into the last 32.

Barnes has moved up to flyweight from lightfly for the Almaty tournament.

Irish head coach Billy Walsh said that they were relatively pleased with the draw, adding that the squad were eager to get the tournament underway.
