Olympic silver medallist Kenneth Egan has urged a “disgusted” Joe Ward not to make any rash decisions after his heartbreaking TKO loss at the European Championships in Belarus.

The Moate Light-heavyweight was leading his Polish opponent in yesterday’s 81kg bout but fell and suffered a dislocated kneecap just 20 seconds from the end of the final round.

Egan told RTÉ Sport: “He is disgusted, he’s lying up there in the bed with a cast around his leg. I just went in and said the usual stuff, hard luck.

“He’s only 19 years of age, he has the World Championships, please God, in October.

"[I told him] not to make any rash decisions, he has any amount of time on his hands, he just needs to rest now, put the feet up, he’ll heal quick enough. Six to eight weeks, they reckon, and he’ll get back on the horse.

“[But] he’s really down on himself, he really fancied himself to go out there and taking that gold medal.”
