Irish start well at U23 Championships in Russia

Ireland hit the ground running at the European Under 23 Championships in Russia with Thurles Moran and Jason Quigley recording wins.

Moran beat Israeli welterweight Tubhi Taha Amara 14-10 to book his ticket into the quarter-finals in Kaliningrad.

And two-time Irish Elite finalist Quigley, a gold medal winner at the 2009 European Youth Championships in Poland, posted a comfortable 16-3 decision over Hungarian middleweight Adam Grabecz.

Belfast’s Mark O’Hara and Rohan Date will be in action Wedneday against Aleko Chadashvili of Georgia and Oleg Nekludov of the Ukraine in the lightweight and light-welterweight classes.

2009 Irish Elite champion Declan Geraghty, who reached the last-16 of the 2009 AIBA World Senior Championships in Milan, will be between the ropes versus German bantamweight Erik Sokolov on Thursday.

Hugh Myres and Christy Joyce received byes into the quarter-finals in the light-flyweight and heavyweight classes.

The Irish duo, along with Thurles Moran, will be in quarter-final action on Friday.
