Tyson Fury has won the Irish heavyweight title by stopping Martin Rogan in five rounds at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

The fight was threatened by contractual wrangling during the hours before but the fighters entered the ring with the Irish title on the line and 12 rounds in prospect.

Fury, fighting as a southpaw in the opening rounds and able to rely on a huge height and reach advantage easily evaded Rogan’s rushes forward and big swings, staying behind an effective right-hand jab.

After dominating his opponent physically, Fury caught Rogan with a left at the end of the third and his opponent went down.

Fury pressed on from there, hitting home repeatedly with jabs in the fourth before moving to the body in the fifth round.

A thumping left to the ribs put Rogan down for the second time and though he beat the count, his corner stepped in to end the fight.
