Mayo's Henry Coyle claimed the vacant WBF Light Middleweight title at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar when he beat Italy's Elio Cotena on a technical knockout.
Cotena sustained a extremely deep cut just above his eye after clashing with Coyle’s head and the Italian’s doctor was forced to intervene after the end of the fifth round, much to the delight of the home support.
Cotena had won only 18 of his 28 fights and Coyle is likely to face sterner tests in the future.
Earlier Patrick Hyland had an excellent victory against Fabrizio Trotta in a feather-weight undercard contest.
Hyland floored Trotta in the fourth round to extend his record to 24 wins with no losses.
Trotta had only previously suffered one defeat against English boxer Rendall Munroe.
