Taylor given creed honour

Katie Taylor will read out the boxer's creed at the opening ceremony for the sixth AIBA Women's World Championships in Barbados.

In an historic first for an Irish boxer before a major international event, Taylor, who will be aiming for her third AIBA World lightweight title on the trot in Barbados, will recite the creed calling for fair play and sportsmanship at Thursday's opening ceremony at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium in Bridgetown.

The sixth AIBA World Championships officially began Monday.

However, boxing will not start until Thursday with preliminary round duels.

Ceire Smith, Taylor, Allana Murphy and Sinead Kavanagh will represent Ireland in Barbados.

Murphy and Kavanagh were unlucky to bow out of the EU Championships in August, while Smith won her place on the Irish squad following a box-off win over Debbie Rogers at the National Stadium in Dublin last month.

Taylor, who has won four European titles on the trot and three EU gold's in-a-row, will be chasing her 10th major international title since 2001 in Barbados.

A record breaking 306 boxers from 75 nations will be competing in the Caribbean island nation.
