Kenny Egan named to fight tough Italians

Ten-time Irish senior champion Ken Egan and AIBA World Youth champion Ray Moylette have been named in the Irish squad to take on a star-studded Italian team at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday.

The Italians have named Olympic and double AIBA World Super-Heavyweight champion Roberto Cammerelle and AIBA World Lightweight champion Domenico Valentino, the current AIBA World Boxer of the Year, in their squad along with AIBA 2007 World Heavyweight champion Clemente Russo.

St Michael's Athy lightweight Eric Donovan, who scooped the Boxer of the Championship award after retaining his lightweight title at the Elite National Championships finals last Saturday, will meet Valentino at the Stadium on Friday.

The 60Kg duel will be a repeat of the 2007 European Union quarter-final at the National Stadium, a bout which Valentino won to avenge an earlier defeat to Donovan.

Meanwhile, Cammerelle is in line to meet Cathal McMonagle, who claimed the Irish super-heavyweight crown at the expense of Tommy Sheehan last Saturday.

Cammerelle beat Holy Trinity's McMonagle in the 2007 European Union final at the Stadium.

Ireland will meet the Italians again at the Donegal Celtic club in Belfast on Sunday night.
