Five Irish boxers are within one fight of claiming at least a bronze medal at the men's and women's Ahmet Comert Cup following last-16 wins in Istanbul Turkey on Thursday.

World champ Katie Taylor, 2008 Olympians John Joe Nevin and John Joe Joyce, and Irish senior champions Eric Donovan and Carl Frampton joined Beijing bronze medallist Paddy Barnes in Friday’s quarter-finals.

Taylor, the AIBA 2008 female boxer of the year, chalked up a 12-2 victory over Alexandra Siderenko of the Ukraine and will face Czech lightweight Danus Dilhofova.

Donovan produced a display which Irish head coach Billy Walsh hailed as ‘world class’ to see off the challenge of Elvin Aliyev of Azerbaijan 16-0.

Meanwhile, John Joe Nevin ensured that Ireland did a Ukrainian double following his 6-0 verdict over Ivan Kabanchuk.

Earlier, Frampton edged out Kurganiyev Kurbandiyev of Turkestan 6-5 and Joyce defeated Bulgarian fighter Simeon Antonov on the same scoreline.

Frampton will face Ukrainian featherweight Oleg Malynosky, and Joyce will trade leather with Romanian light welterweight Traian Lupo.

Welterweight Willie McLoughlin lost 5-3 to Moldovan Vasilii Belous and middleweight Eamon O'Kane lost 6-1 to world light heavyweight champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan on Wednesday.
