Taylor gears up for World Championships

Katie Taylor has finished up her final training session at the Ningbo Sports Centre in China ahead of the 5th AIBA Women's World Championships which begin in Ningbo City on Saturday.

The 21-year-old reigning World, European and European Union lightweight champion, who claimed her first World title in New Delhi in November 2006, could be involved in preliminary round action in the evening (Irish time).

The weigh-in, draw and opening ceremony will be held in Ningbo City tomorrow with preliminary round bouts in most weigh categories to follow.

Speaking from Ningbo City, Irish team manager Anna Moore said that Taylor, who will have her dad and coach Peter Taylor in her corner, was eager to get in the ring.

She said: 'Katie has been taking part in an AIBA training camp in Ningbo City for the last six days and she has got a lot of work done. She is looking very fit and is looking forward to beginning her World title defence.'

There will be 23 boxers will be competing in the lightweight category. If Taylor, from the Bray Boxing club, successfully defends her title in Ningbo City then Irish boxers will have claimed two World titles - Ireland's only World titles in any sport - at lightweight in the last five weeks.

Westport lightweight Ray Moylett won lightweight gold at the World Youth Championships in Mexico earlier this month.
